Proper etiquette is a skill that will get you very far in life. Whether it’s learning to say please and thank you, using your turn signal when driving, or holding the door for the next person, having manners can do everything from express gratitude to help avoid accidents and show respect. But what about at the dentist’s office? Did you know that there’s a such thing as dental etiquette, too?
If you’re heading to a dental appointment but aren’t sure how to put your best foot forward, here are some tips for making a good impression.
Brush and Floss First
Before your next appointment, save yourself and your dentist some time and brush and floss your teeth beforehand. This will make your cleaning a lot easier because your dentist can focus on removing tartar from your teeth and not your lunch!
Be Honest About Your At-Home Routine
When your dentist asks you if you’re brushing and flossing at home, be honest. When patients don’t floss it can cause their gums to bleed at the dentist’s office, but if you say you are flossing, and your gums are still bleeding your dentist may be concerned there is a bigger issue at hand. Thus, when it comes to your oral health, honesty is always the best policy.
Be Careful of Who You Bring
While your dentist is always happy to see you and your family, be sure that if you must bring young children to your appointment that they are mature enough to wait comfortably for you, or that you have someone with them to watch them. Loud noises can be distracting to other patients, and children can easily become injured if they are too rambunctious in the exam room or waiting area.
Give Proper Notice
Emergencies happen, but if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please do so as soon as possible. This will allow your dentist to open that time slot up to someone who needs an urgent appointment and could save you a missed appointment fee.
If you are running behind, let your dentist know at once. You may still need to reschedule your appointment if you are too late, but it will save you the trouble of coming all the way in only to be rescheduled.
Communicate Fears
If you have dental anxiety, don’t be afraid to tell your dentist. Many dentists offer sedation options that can make you feel much more comfortable during your appointment, even if it’s just for an exam and cleaning.
Remember, your dentist is here to help you achieve optimum oral health. Make the most of your appointments by following these helpful dental etiquette tips.
