What Are Implant Dentures?

An implant denture doesn’t sit on your gums the way traditional dentures do. Instead, it is attached to dental implants, which are screw-like posts that are surgically inserted into the jawbone. The implant posts will keep your new teeth anchored in place, and they will also mimic the functions of your natural tooth roots.

You can either get a fixed implant denture or a removable implant denture. Here’s a brief look at the differences between these two options.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures always stay in your mouth and can only be taken out by a dentist. Many patients find this option to be more convenient since they can care for their implant dentures the same way they would their natural teeth. Compared to removable implant dentures, fixed implant dentures usually require more implant posts (often around four to eight).

Removable Implant Dentures

As the name implies, a removable implant denture can be taken out of your mouth whenever needed. Since removable implant dentures don’t require as many implant posts (usually around two to five), they can be a good choice for patients who don’t have as much bone density in their jaws.

The Implant Denture Process

First, an initial consultation will be held so that we can confirm that you are a viable candidate for dental implants. Our team will determine whether bone grafting or other types of preliminary work are required. Then, once your mouth is ready, surgery can be performed to place the implant posts in your jawbone.

Over the next three to six months, the implant posts will gradually fuse with the jawbone. Abutments will eventually be attached to the posts. Then the final denture will be made, and the abutments will be used to anchor it to the dental implants, leaving you with a newly completed smile.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

Have you lost all of the teeth in one or both arches? Is your mouth free of gum disease? Is there plenty of bone in your jaw? Are you diligent about practicing good oral hygiene?

Being able to answer “yes” to all of the above questions likely means that you are a viable candidate for implant dentures. Our team will be able to help you figure out for sure whether they’re a good choice for you after examining your mouth.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

With the improved biting force provided by the implant posts, implant dentures allow you to eat many different kinds of foods without restriction. Also, the stimulation from the implant posts can put a stop to bone loss in your jaw. And when it comes to longevity, your implant dentures can last for decades, which is far longer than traditional tooth replacement options.
